Residents of Fulham recently packed a meeting to oppose plans for the main drive shaft of the proposed London Super Sewer to be sited in the middle of a residential area. The proposal would see residents of Carnwath Road in Fulham being faced not only with six years of major construction work but also enduring ongoing fumes from the ventilation tower to be sited nearby.
Whilst no-one disputes the need for a solution to the ongoing problem of pollution in the Thames, the proposed Thames Tunnel does seem to be receiving considerable opposition from many London boroughs, not just in the SW6 area. Indeed the Fulham Council Leader, Cllr Stephen Greenhalgh, seemed to sum up the mood of a number of the London councils when he said that “The super sewer is a sledge hammer to crack a nut and we should trust the respected world experts who have repeatedly come forward to say there are cheaper, greener and less disruptive ways to improve water quality in the Thames.”
In a way this ongoing dispute reflects the dilemma which faces all those who strive for a cleaner environment. Whether cleaning up the Thames or cleaning the kitchen at home in SW6 the question is similar; is cleaning justified when it comes at any price?
For a start most domestic cleaning chemicals can be dangerous. In the past few months alone there have been tragic stories of youngsters being hospitalised after being given cleaning fluid to drink in error alongside the tale of a man hospitalised for mixing cleaning chemicals which then gave off toxic gas. Cleaning chemicals have been cited as one of the reasons why our homes can in fact be more polluted than the outside air.
The solution to this dilemma lies in management; in using cleaning chemicals sparingly, choosing green or natural products wherever possible and making sure that those chemicals we use are stored safely. So, when it comes to our kitchens, a gentle wipe down with warm water will suffice to keep most dirt at bay if the cleaning is done as soon as a spill occurs. Leave spills to mount and soon you have a situation which may only respond to harsh chemicals or the alternative of a good steam clean.
So, we are not saying that harsh cleaning chemicals should be banned, just that they should only be used as a last resort and with careful planning that last resort may be a long way off.
