My WC2 domestic cleaner is on alert this week. Being one of the most sociable parts of London, filled with Covent Garden culture, the Royal Opera House and not to mention the Oktoberfest that takes place at Porterhouse Stout & Oyster Bar on Maiden Lane, we like to make the most of WC2. For the rest of the weekend (until the 23rd October) Dear Husband and neighbours will be out and about enjoying – sorry ‘sampling’—some of Germany’s most famous beers. Cleaning the bars out is more what I reckon will be happening!
Porterhouse, according to Dear Husband, has 110 bottled beers to ‘sample’, and he reckons he plans on sampling most of them over the weekend.
With that much drinking on the horizon, and with the Christmas season on its way, it seemed to make sense to hire a domestic cleaner. I’ve just gone back to work, now the children are in primary school on Drury Lane, so I’m no longer home all day and able to keep on top of the housework.
For the last few months, I’ve battled with cleaning the house and keeping the laundry in order, but, I figure, if Dear Husband is happy to go to ‘sample’ 110 beers, then I can allow myself the luxury of a domestic cleaner once a week.
We’re a pretty clean, tidy family anyway: we clean up after ourselves and we don’t leave stuff lying all over the place, but I really am not a fan of dusting anymore, so having someone clean through the house once a week makes everything feel like new. I love walking through the front door with the kids on a Thursday afternoon to that ‘just-cleaned’ smell.
The cleaner does the ironing, cleans the windows, vacuums and dusts. I still wipe the kitchen surfaces down daily and I still clean the toilet and bathroom a couple of times a week, but she goes through the whole place thoroughly. I guess that the difference is that I want to just get the chore over, so I can do something I enjoy, or get to work, but she’s paid to do it – it’s her job—which gives her far more incentive than the freebie my family expected from me each week.
So, while Dear Husband is out this weekend, I might just consider packing the kids off to Grandma, meeting up with the girls and heading to the Tequila Season in Covent Garden that finishes this weekend. We had so much fun last year at Siete Leguas that it would be a shame to miss out this year.
With the house clean and empty maybe we can all meet back at ours after our beer- and tequila-fuelled evenings for a bit of Wii or Karaoke.
