London’s hotels’ carpets have an enormous job loaded onto them. As one of the most visited cities in the world, London hotels see a phenomenal number of guests. And with the Olympic Games arriving in town next year, the number of visitors is only likely to increase. VisitBritain reckons there will be around 30 million people gliding across London’s hotels’ carpets in 2012, bringing with them £17.2 billion spending money (that’s not each, obviously!)
Now, that strikes me as a lot of people and a lot of money that could be making its way into the London hotel industry.
Poor carpets!
Hotel carpets put up with a lot of abuse: feet, suitcase wheels, concierge trolleys. And that’s before you consider the states revelers can get into when they’re on holiday.
With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and both the Olympics and Paralympics, there is likely to be a fair amount of reveling as well.
Hotel carpets are a large part of creating an excellent impression on guests. A dirty, worn carpet will be noticed immediately, whereas a well-chosen, well-kept carpet will add to the ambiance your hotel is trying to achieve.
Carpets are worn down quickly by visitors walking around in their shoes, which are covered in grime from London’s streets. Reception carpets should be chosen for their ruggedness and ability to deal with high volumes of traffic. Usually patterned or textured carpets hide a multitude of sins until you are able to get them steam-cleaned. Daily or twice-daily the reception carpet should be vacuumed, and, in peak season, you’d be treating your carpet very well if you had it steam-cleaned every 6 weeks to 2 months. It may seem like an extravagance, but consider the alternative: buying and laying a new carpet every couple of years due to lack of care.
Bedroom carpets need to feel more opulent, more cosy. Guests want to kick their shoes off after a long day reveling, shopping or site-seeing and be able to relax in luxury or, at least, comfort. Carpet, especially next to the bed and near the door, gets the highest traffics, so housekeepers should pay special attention to cleaning those areas to give the pile the best chance of long-term survival. Again, steam cleaning the hotel bedrooms’ carpets will help them stay looking luxurious for longer, though once every 6 months or so would be plenty, unless those revelers have been getting a little too rowdy!
