Cleaning Computers

Cleaning banks of computers – what a rare treat! Cleaner London cleaners have just returned from cleaning a hundred computers in the students’ computer rooms at Queen Mary University.

We’ve all been told many, many times that our keyboards carry more bacteria than a toilet doorknob. Cleaning a computer’s keyboard and extractor fan will keep the computer in better working order, but having have hundreds to deal with each day, how can a cleaner possibly keep on top of that?

Obviously cleaning each of the computers each day would be both impossible and nonsensical, but they still need to have at least a wipe-over in order to be clean and to not spread germs.

Daily computer care for the students’ computer rooms should include, as a matter of course, a wipe-down with some sort of anti-bacterial solution. Whether you use a cloth dampened with a spritz of anti-bacterial spray, or you opt for a multi-pack of wipes, you will stem the spread of germs dramatically.

Aside from the germs that can spread with so many students using the same keyboards, such heavy use of a computer is likely to affect the functionality of the keyboard. Sticky fingers, flakes of skin, broken hair, dust, spilt drinks (even though they shouldn’t be there!) and sneezes all work their way deep into the keyboard, and, over time, they can make key sticky until they stop working altogether.

To keep keyboards working for longer, simply turn them over before you wipe them down with the anti-bacterial cloth, allowing any particles to drop out. Once a semester, use an air canister to really get the dust out more effectively.

When we cleaned the banks of computers in preparation for the next semester, we paid close attention to the keyboards, but we also cleaned the towers carefully, using brushes and air canisters to remove the dust that had built up on the extractor fan and on the grid in front of it, which collects so much dust as it fights to keep the computers – that get such heavy use – cool.

On a day-to-day basis, wiping the extractor cover gently clean of dust would help the computers cooler, and so running more effectively.

Finally, the monitors need to be wiped with screenwipes, and, again, quickly going over the fan cover at the back will also ensure a longer life.

Although the computers in a students’ computer room need to majority of the work, dusting the work-stations and keeping dust low in the room as a whole, by vacuuming daily, will also extent your students’ computers a much longer and more effective working life.
